Case Acoustics

The chassis dictates the resonance. Material density is the single most important factor in a keyboard's acoustic signature.

A keyboard case is more than a housing; it's an acoustic chamber. Lightweight plastics act as resonators, amplifying high-frequency spring ping and slider scratch. Dense metals, conversely, absorb higher frequencies, leaving only the fundamental low-pitch impact of the bottom-out.

Material Breakdown

6063 Aluminum

The industry standard for premium customs. At ~2.7g/cm³, it provides sufficient mass to kill most unwanted resonance while remaining machinable and capable of excellent anodization.

Solid Brass

At ~8.5g/cm³, brass is overwhelmingly dense. Usually reserved for internal weights due to cost and patina, a full brass case delivers a uniquely deadened, deep sound profile unmatched by aluminum.

Polycarbonate

Lighter (1.2g/cm³) and more flexible. It yields a "clackier," higher-pitched sound. We generally avoid PC unless specifically aiming for a lightweight, travel-friendly build.

Common Mistakes

  • Buying a heavy case but using a thin, flex-cut PCB which ruins the rigid typing feel.
  • Assuming all aluminum cases sound the same; internal cavity volume matters as much as material.
  • Overstuffing a high-quality metal case with PE foam, killing the natural acoustic signature of the material.
